The fifth week of the Laois hurling championships has come to an end and another Team of the Week is here. We had significant games in the SHC, Premier IHC, IHC and JHC over the weekend. We are now down to the finals in the Senior and Premier Intermediate grades. While Trumera and Ballypickas were crowned winners of the IHC and JHC grades respectively. Following all the games, we have managed to whittle our team down to 15 players. In total, six clubs are represented this week – with Clough-Ballacolla and Borris-Kilcotton leading the way with four each. Check it out below: 1 – Eoin Fleming (Borris-Kilcotton)![]() Eoin Fleming was immense as Borris-Kilcotton saw off Camross to qualify for their third straight Laois SHC final. Although he was beaten by David Mortimer in the first half, Fleming pulled off a string of fine saves in the second to ensure that Camross could not stage a comeback. 2 – Darren Maher (Clough-Ballacolla)The glue that holds the Clough-Ballacolla defence together, Maher’s importance to this team is immense. He made a sensational block in the second half to deny a certain goal too. 3 – Enda Parlon (Borris-Kilcotton)A promising underage player with Laois, Parlon’s potential is now turning into a reality as he has cemented his place at full back for Borris-Kilcotton. Got the better of Niall Holmes in the Camross game and will now have to step up again to take on either Willie Dunphy or Stephen Maher. 4 – Diarmaid Conway (Clough-Ballacolla)After enjoying a breakthrough year with Laois, Conway has continued that progress with Clough-Ballacolla and is now one of their key defenders. He held the dangerous Ross King scoreless and is getting better with every game that he plays. 5 – Eamon Duff (Ballyfin)Ballyfin are the only unbeaten side left in the Premier IHC and will look to hold onto that record in the final against Ballinakill in two weeks time. Eamon Duff has been consistent in all of their games and fired over two points from wing back in the win over Camross at the weekend. 6 – Matthew Whelan (Borris-Kilcotton)The battle between Zane Keenan and Matthew Whelan was earmarked as one of the key ones before the game and the Borris-Kilcotton man won it. He held Keenan scoreless and charged forward with possession whenever he got it in a typically passionate display. 7 – Bryan Bredin (Trumera)The Trumera team has slowly changed in recent years with talented youngsters joining the ranks – and one of those is Bryan Bredin. A ferocious competitor, he had a great game at wing back on Friday evening as his team claimed championship glory. 8 – Joe Campion (Borris-Kilcotton)![]() Typically plies his trade at centre forward, but the switch to midfield worked wonders in the win over Camross. Campion fired over four points and won almost everything around midfield too. 9 – Darragh Connolly (Ballyfin)Started at midfield and was later moved to full-forward in Ballyfin’s hard-fought win over Camross in the Premier IHC semi-final. Got through a lot of work and finished with 1-3 from play. A real handful for any opponent no matter what position he takes up. 10 – Robbie Phelan (Clough-Ballacolla)Man of the match in the 2020 final from just a few months ago, Robbie Phelan has continued that form in this championship. Added four more points to his tally on Sunday and his pace has troubled every single defence thus far. 11 – Jordan Walshe (Clough-Ballacolla)In what is a star-studded Clough-Ballacolla forward line, Jordan Walshe can sometimes wrongly go under the radar. But his importance to the team should not be understated and he demonstrated it on Sunday. A lively player, he took over free taking duties in the second half and nailed every single one under great pressure. 12 – Cha Dwyer (Ballinakill)Was picked up by Ciaran McEvoy from the start but set the tone for Ballinakill with a great point in the opening minute. He finished with eight in total, seven of them in the first half when they built up an unassailable lead. 13 – Seamus Fitzpatrick (Ballinakill)Has recovered from a serious knee injury to take his place in the Ballinakill attack again and he was excellent on Saturday evening. Hit three points from play in the opening quarter and five in total and showed some classy touches despite the horrible weather conditions. 14 – Niall Sinnott (Trumera)One of Trumera’s most consistent performers over the last number of years, Niall Sinnott was at his best against Clough-Ballacolla on Friday night. His man of the match display included four of the game’s last six points as his team clinched glory once again. 15 – Daire McWey (Ballypickas)![]() A stalwart for Ballypickas, Daire McWey was on the winning side as they claimed Junior A glory. The forward finished the match with 1-2 – and his goal against the wind at the start of the second half proved the crucial score for his team.
